Howard paces Mavs over Blazers

Basketball Betting Lines

02/05/2009 - Dallas, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Josh Howard led five Mavericks in double figures with 23 points, as Dallas won its fourth straight game by upending the Portland Trail Blazers, 104-99.

Dirk Nowitzki logged 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Jason Terry and fellow reserve Brandon Bass chipped in 20 and 19 points, respectively, for Dallas, which shot a healthy 55.1 percent from the floor.

Brandon Roy led all scorers with 26 points to go with seven rebounds for Portland, which saw its five-game winning streak come to an end. LaMarcus Aldridge ended with 21 points, while Jerryd Bayless and Travis Outlaw came off the bench to chip in 14 and 13 points, respectively.

"Whenever you play a team like [Dallas], or any team, you've got to be sharp and execute on both ends of the floor," Blazers head coach Nate McMillan said. "We win three of the four quarters against this team and we just don't pull it out."

Outlaw's three-pointer late in the first quarter helped Portland head into the second with a slim 29-27 lead.

Bass scored six straight points late in the half to jump-start an 11-2 run, as Dallas went ahead 57-45 at the break.

The Blazers still trailed heading into the fourth quarter, 82-72, but pulled within six, 93-87, when Rudy Fernandez drilled a three-pointer with 4:19 to play.

Bass again came through for the Mavs with five straight points, and Howard tipped in a Terry miss for a 100-87 advantage with 1:32 remaining.

A pair of Roy three-pointers made things interesting in the waning seconds. The latter trey made it 100-97 with 10.4 ticks on the clock. Terry came down and hit two free throws, and Nowitzki closed it out with a pair more at the line in the final seconds.

"The big thing is we got the win," Dallas point guard Jason Kidd said. "Portland is a tough team. They are not going to stop playing and they are well coached. The lesson for us tonight was that the game is not over until it is over."

Game Notes

The Mavs have dominated Portland recently, winning 17 of the last 19 meetings between the two clubs, including 14 of the last 15 games contested between the teams in Dallas...Fernandez finished with 12 points for Portland, which shot 48.1 percent from the floor...Kidd tallied seven points, seven rebounds and 10 assists for Dallas.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).

NFL Football Sports Betting

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.

New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. NFL bettors saw this one coming, as they bet the Ravens down from +6 to +3.5 as the week progressed. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.

His three replacements all put up embarrassing numbers. They went a combined 17 for 33, and threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The New England defense was encouraging, as they held the Ravens to 2/12 third down conversions and surrendered just ten first downs. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.

HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.

The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.

RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.

First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.

The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.

These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.

New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.
